Wednesday Word - October 28th "Falling Back"

I have waited close to eight months for this special event. Early Sunday morning, I get my ‘hour’ back. You know, the ‘hour’ that is stolen (like a solid night’s sleep) every spring. Honestly, losing an ‘hour’ does indeed affect me. Is it just mental? Is it purely psychological? Please don’t judge me unfairly.

According to SleepBetter.org…

-Losing just one hour of sleep can disrupt the body's circadian rhythm, potentially

disrupting sleep patterns and affecting daily activities, due to sleep deprivation.

-This situation results in slower thinking and reaction time. Moodiness and exhaustion are also common, which can lead to fatigue and irritability.

Well, that explains a lot about my body (and mind) craving the loss of an hour’s sleep . Right dear?

Here are some ‘facts’ to impress your children about Daylight Saving Time:

-Contrary to popular belief, no federal rule mandates that U.S. states or territories observe daylight saving time.

-Most U.S. residents set their clocks one hour forward in spring and one hour back in fall. But people in Hawaii and most of Arizona—along with the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands—will do nothing.

According to one study, Daylight saving time, however, can bring many benefits including a decrease in the number of traffic accidents, traffic fatalities, and incidences of crime. Congress noted other advantages while updating legislation in 1986, including "more daylight outdoor playtime for the children, greater utilization of parks and recreation areas, expanded economic opportunity through extension of daylight hours to peak shopping hours.

So, seize the ‘hour’. No matter if you use that extra daylight later in the day to play with the kids, shop or just sleep. Just, seize the ‘hour’.

Daylight Saving Time happens this weekend.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour

before you go to bed on Saturday night.

October 21st Edition - Cindy Davis

Have you ever caught yourself getting so involved in something that it overwhelmed you in such a way it was no longer fun, but stressful? This is what I mean; there are so many things that are enjoyable in life, but then that joy can very quickly turn into frustration if you take in too much at once. Things like church involvement, mission work, job activities and spending time with family, especially with children (young or old) should take stress out of life, not add to it!

That kind of time is getting less and less as my daughter, Christina, has announced her engagement to be married in September, 2010. Yep, just what I needed, one more thing to worry about! But, I know God will lead me and get me through everything that is thrown my way. I know my faith is so often challenged and that is a good thing. It keeps me humble and shows me He is in control and is always there for me. So, the key to all of this madness is to simply let God be in control and enjoy His peace at doing so.

Ecclesiastes 2:24-25
So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him? God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to those who please him...

Wednesday Word - October 7th

It’s another great day at the Dixie Classic Fair. Of course, today is special because NEEDTOBREATHE is in concert in the Grandstand at 7:30 and we welcome the SHELLY MOORE BAND for a pre-show beginning @ 7:00. The Concert is free once you are in the fair and today only you can get in for 5 cans of Lowes Foods brand foods.

BUT…if you’ll allow me a personal spin on the day – it is most special and somewhat nostalgic. There will be no accolades from Willard Scott or letter from the President, but in an assisted living facility in middle Tennessee, my Aunt Mary celebrates her 100th birthday!

If anyone ever walked the earth that deserves a “Well Done, Good & Faithful Servant”, in my opinion, it is my Aunt Mary. She never married or had a family. Instead, she gave her entire life to reaching children with the Gospel in Bible Clubs and Summer Camps. Her physical heritage bears no heirs, but her spiritual lineage runs deep.

It’s seems only fitting that God numbers her days beyond a century. Her story is nothing more than a life of faithfulness – in serving her Savior and dwelling in His presence.

For most of us, the fair evokes a broad spectrum of memories – from our own childhood to the days we boarded the carousel with our own toddlers…today, my memories are like a homespun quilt from Yesterday Village – a true reminder of the fabric from which are lives are sown. Happy 100th Birthday Aunt Mary – it’s a privilege to be cut from the same cloth…and in your honor, I enjoyed chocolate chip cookies for breakfast, because that’s what you would have served…
