Wednesday Word for February 16th

Well, It’s a couple days after Valentine’s Day.. Are you all flower-ed, card-ed, and candy-ed out? Perhaps you find it interesting like I do that individuals can turn on the charm and the ’giving’ feelings all because of the allure of the great ’day of love’. Did you see it? Were you possibly a participant when it’s out of your normal activity? Did you change?

I’m always amazed at how quickly stores like Walgreens and CVS can have isles and isles of decorations, gifts, balloons, etc.. You name it, and they have SO MUCH stuff pertaining to the current holiday. THEN, the next day, they’ve changed. They’ve completely changed their appearance and have moved on to the next event or ‘what’s hot’ happening.

So, here’s a thought: DO YOU CHANGE? Does your ‘ inside appearance’ change? Holidays come and go, seasons come and go - - it’s in with the new and out with the old. But WE are supposed to have something inside of us that is sustaining, that is lasting, that is the SAME; Day in and day out… WE of course = Grace receiving children of a loving God! It SHOULD be permanent right?

Spring is right around the corner. Enjoy it. I certainly will!
BUT DON’T CHANGE.

Wednesday Word for February 9th

If you use a computer there are three things you can be sure of:

(1)     Sooner or later your hard drive will crash.
(2)     It will crash at the worst possible time.
(3)     When you go to reload your new drive, you will not reload about half the stuff you had on the old drive…it’s stuff that’s out-dated, stuff that wasn’t useful in the first place or just stuff!

And if you are human, those same three principles apply:

(1)     Sooner or later your life will experience a “crash” of some sort.
(2)     The “crash” will come at the worst and least expected time.
(3)     After you process it all and go to reload your life, you will probably find many things that no longer need to be there…bad attitudes, bad habits, bad relationships,   just unprofitable “stuff”.

We never look forward to a hard drive crash or any of life’s crises but I can say, each one gives us a time to revaluate what’s really important…what we need to keep and those things that are excess baggage and weigh us down.

Now that I got you all serious,  how about some big Valentine’s Hug to put it all in perspective… Happy Valentine’s Day!

Wednesday Word for February 2nd

When I was a kid, my favorite excuse for not doing a job around the house was always, “No one told me it needed to be done”.   This drove my parents crazy.  I can remember my dad on more than one occasion saying something like, “Look at this trash can…it is overflowing with garbage!  I shouldn’t have to tell you to empty it, you should just be able to see that it needs to be done and then do it!”  Now, with 3 children of my own, I can completely understand his frustration!

I am pretty sure that I frustrate my Heavenly father in the same way sometimes.   How many times have I neglected work that needed to be done within the Kingdom, using the excuse, “Well, God has not called me to that work, so I will leave it for someone else.”  Yes, we all have unique gifts and a unique calling.  Yes, we should put those gifts to work wherever God leads us.  However, I am convinced that there are some big messes in this world that God has already told us repeatedly to attend to.  We do not need to wait for Him to specifically call us to act in these areas because he already has commanded us to do so in His Word.

There are dozens of scriptures where God says it is our responsibility to care for the widow, the orphan and the stranger.  In Matthew 25, known as the “Parable of the Sheep and Goats”, Jesus says he will welcome the “sheep”—those people, who, throughout their lives, nourished the hungry, invited in strangers, clothed the naked, looked after the sick, and visited prisoners.   As followers of Jesus, we are compelled to be the sheep.

If you are looking to roll up your sleeves and start cleaning up some of the world’s messes, there are so many places where you are needed.  One wonderful way to make a difference is by sponsoring a child through Compassion International.  You can read about my recent trip to Mexico City with Compassion here: http://compassioninmexico.blogspot.com/.  Also, make sure to listen to WBFJ on February 22nd and 23rd as we are dedicating those days to getting as many needy kids sponsored as possible.
