Wednesday Word for March 23rd

Many of you, like me for the last week or so have been intrigued by the buzzer beaters and getting caught up in all the "madness" that March brings! And although it's fun and entertaining to watch, many other important issues fill our world. Days after the Japan earthquake, coverage was seemingly on every channel and the networks couldn't even keep up. And then, it seemed like after a week or so, the coverage lessened, but we know the devastation was still there and so real, but it wasn't in the forefront of our minds, let along our hearts. In today's media-filled world,  I think we get so desensitized to tragedies like this. It seems so far away and we can't relate; or it won't happen here. According to the latest figures, giving is down (to Japan) nearly 40% given the same amount of time during the Haiti quake. Why? Americans and most of the world see Japan as a wealthy nation as apposed to Haiti as a very poor country. Bottom line here: pray for these people, their families and all the rescue and relief efforts. And if God lays it on your heart to contribute monetary, be there "one shinning moment" this March!! Hey, did someone say NFL lockout?

Wednesday Word for March 16th

Traffic…weather…music.
Traffic...weather…music.
Things can get a little routine for all of us.
But then life happens. We get THE call.
Like many afternoons at WBFJ, I get word of a fender bender or a slow down. I report it and go on.
But there are days like yesterday when I get reports of an accident and I know it is bad. I know someone probably died in the crash.
It’s those calls that shake me up and remind me life is about real people… friends, family or someone else’s friends and family.
None of us are immune from getting the call.
March 17, 1991 I received mine. My brother-in-law called to tell me that my 81 year old mom and dad had died in a car crash on Highway 52 in Mt. Airy.
It was a Sunday night and they had been visiting family and shut-ins.
The good news is they lived a full live and are with the Lord forever.
Whether you are a part of the WBFJ Traffic Team, prayer partner, giver, listener, volunteer or all the above, I want to personally thank you for being a part of this family.
Let’s not let the ROUTINE or fear of THE call to discourage us and keep us from pressing on.

Wednesday Word for March 9th

One morning a few weeks ago I was on facebook and noticed that my son, Chad, had typed this:

‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever is a good person, shall not perish but have everlasting life?’  I don’t think so.  Just doing good deeds will not get you there. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life.’

When I asked him what the story behind this was, Chad's response was "I had just listened to Andy Stanley and in his message he brought out a lot of good points; such as this!"

We are saved my His grace, not works.  Does that mean that once saved we can do anything we want or from now on life will be easy?  No, I'm afraid not.  When Jesus lives in our heart, we trust Him to guide us through whatever storm we face.  As a Christian, one should not want to stray from God, but unfortunately, we are still sinners and will do so.  But the difference is...we are forgiven by the sacrifice of God's son, Jesus Christ and His tremendous love for us.  Keep doing the good deeds, but do so with the love of Jesus in your heart.

Letter to the editor:  Why go to church?

"I've been going to church for 30 years now and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time going to church every Sunday, and my pastor is wasting his time by preparing and giving sermons at all."

This ‘Letter to the Editor’ started a real controversy, sparking many in the community to ‘chime in’ on the conversation.  After four weeks, this person’s response kinda sums it up…

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this... they all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not provided these meals, I would be ‘physically dead’ today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for spiritual nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"

Are you going through the motions?? Showing up for ‘church’ is maybe half the battle. But, are you showing up wanting to ‘experience’ God, via the pastor’s sermon, the hymns of praise or even through a friendly smile from the usher at the front door?   Ask God through the Holy Sprit to speak to you today.  He will.

“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.”
                                                                                    1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV

Wednesday Word for February 23rd

This past weekend, I spent as I have many weekends over the last 10 years – sitting pool side, observing a swimming competition featuring one of my children.  While my heart always jumps when a “Decker” is on the starting block, my favorite part of every swim meet is when the relays take to the water.  Knowing the importance of every member of the relay team makes me watch in anticipation of knowing that victory comes with every stroke and not just on the last lap.

Yesterday and today, we are giving you the opportunity to join our relay team in making an eternal difference in the life of a child.  By sponsoring a child thru Compassion International, you are not only investing in the life a needy child and their family, but you are also joining the “relay” that will bring the Gospel to this life, this household and this community.

Like the Good Samaritan, each of us has a part in the effort of providing compassion on those that are in need.  It is a privilege to have those “beautiful feet” that bring the Good News.  Remember, every step, every stroke leads to victory.  Thanks for considering child sponsorship during the WBFJ Days Of Compassion – together, we press on for the prize!
